Swollen, painful, or tired feet are often thought to be the logical consequence of an active day or wearing the wrong shoes. But sometimes, these symptoms reveal much more than just temporary discomfort . They can be a silent reflection of a struggling liver .
The liver is an essential organ for the balance of our body: it filters, purifies, stores, and transforms. When it slows down or becomes unbalanced, it sends signals , sometimes subtle… often through the feet.
1. Swollen feet or ankles for no apparent reason

Why? When the liver malfunctions, it can cause water retention in the tissues, particularly in the lower limbs. Lymphatic and venous drainage is impaired, leading to swelling.
Things to watch for: asymmetrical swelling, pain on pressure, feeling of heaviness at the end of the day.
2. Persistent itching on the soles of the feet, especially at night
Why? An overloaded liver struggles to eliminate toxins. These waste products, circulating in the blood, can irritate the nerve endings in the skin , causing intense, sometimes unbearable, itching.
Tip: If this wakes you up at night, it’s a warning sign. Seek medical advice.
3. Spontaneous bruises on the feet or ankles
Why? The liver is responsible for synthesizing clotting factors . In cases of liver dysfunction, bruising can occur easily, even without visible trauma.
This symptom may reveal an imbalance in blood clotting , sometimes linked to advanced liver disease.
4. Bright redness on the soles of the feet

Why? This phenomenon may reflect vasodilation linked to hormonal imbalances caused by a failing liver. It is similar to palmar erythema, a classic sign of chronic liver disease.
Note: this redness is often symmetrical and does not disappear at rest.
5. Ridged, curved, or deformed nails
Why? Nutritional deficiencies caused by poor assimilation (related to a tired liver) can impair nail growth.
To observe: horizontal white striations, spoon-shaped nails or nails convex like a “watch glass”.
6. Burning sensation in the feet
Why? Damage to the peripheral nervous system, called peripheral neuropathy , can be linked to cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis . It manifests as a burning or tingling sensation, especially at rest.
